So, today is the last day of Mustaches for Kids, a charity activity designed to raise money for needy schools through DonorsChoose.org

Poegles.com, believing in the art of poetry, threw itself into the action this year with a vengeance, raising $5,400 to date for poetry and literacy projects in high poverty schools in New York, Ohio, Virginia, and North Carolina.  If you’d like to know more about the projects we supported, below are links to some of them on My Giving Page:

Differentiated Learning Through Differentiated Texts
100 Students; Only One Langston Hughes
Change My Students’ View of Poetry
Desperate Need for a Classroom Library
Using Poetry to Unlock the Universe
Fun Reading that Increases Learning
“Lucy’s” Literacy Lessons For Second Graders
Recording Oral Histories
Inspiring Poets
Mortals, Be Not Fools! Give My Students Shakespeare!

We want to thank everyone who has given to date.  Here’s just one of the “thank you” notes we’ve received from teachers whose projects we have supported:

Words cannot express my appreciation for your generosity. I cannot wait to tell the kids. They will be so happy. We have just started our journey as poets and now we have so many mentor texts to use and become familiar with and learn from. Thank you so much for taking the time to read and then fund our project. This gift will have such an impact on my students. Thank you from the bottom of my heart! The kids are going to be so thrilled. THANK YOU! Jennifer

The fundraiser will culminate at 7:00 pm tonight with ‘Stache Bash 2008, at the Galapagos Art Space in DUMBO, Brooklyn. The ‘Stache Bash is both a party to celebrate a month worth of fundraising for a worthy cause, and also a terrifying Thunderdome-style competition; one which mercilessly pits one Mustache against the other — friend against friend, brother against brother — until only the Sweetest ‘Stache remains. This sole survivor will be crowned the Mustache King of New York, eventually to join the other Mustache Immortals in Mustache Valhalla!  Any of you who are in New York, please do join us.

Week ThreeSo, it’s frightening, I know, but week three has arrived in the Mustaches for Kids fundraising blitz for needy classrooms.   At Poegles.com, we’re raising money for poetry projects in school systems in the Bronx, Richmond VA, Ohio, Washington DC, and elsewhere.  So far we’ve raised nearly $1,000 for the kids- you can keep track of the amount at the sidebar widget on this website or by visiting my donor page at DonorsChoose.org.  We’re accepting donations through December 15- don’t miss this opportunity to put poetry into the lives of America’s youth.  I’ll be posting another ‘stache progress update next week.  Poeglers, I’m curious about your feelings- does the ‘stache suit me?  Or is it just shameful?

Week 1

Week 1

So, we’re off.  Week one of the Mustaches 4 Kids competition is underway.  I celebrated the end of the first week by getting a shave at the nearest Italian barbershop here in Brooklyn.

One of the esteemed founders of Poegles.com has decided to use this platform of poegling enthusiasts to support a good cause. Mustaches 4 Kids, a charity, has teamed with DonorsChoose.org to help raise $1,000,000 for classrooms around the country by challenging men to find sponsorship to grow their mustaches.

I’ll be supporting four projects of a literary nature that will bring poetry into the lives of needy kids. I hope to raise $1,577 to support these efforts:  So far I’ve raised $180 with 6 donors supporting the ‘stache.  The projects I’m supporting include:

-An ‘oral history’ recording project for 20 incredibly inquisitive fourth-graders in a public South Bronx school.
-A project to purchase children’s poetry books for kids in a public elementary school in Winston-Salem, NC.
-Creating a ‘poetry library’ for 21 inner-city second graders in Washington, D.C.
-Creating a ‘poetry library’ for a special needs class in Ohio.

You’ll note on the side bar here at www.poegles.com we have added a widget to track my progress.

You can visit my page to contribute, should you so choose. If you feel up to growing a mustache, please join us in this endeavour!
