Everything Happens for a Reason (2)
Filed Under Poegles | Leave a Comment
Another poem from the literature class at Roanoke College:
It Happened So Slowly, She Didn’t Notice
If he’d just given up
instead of trying so damn hard,
she’d have no illusions about her status.
It had happened before,
one is enough, two is a conspiracy.
His heart just wasn’t in it.
All he had to do was say
“Look, I can’t do it.”
It’s as simple as she’d come to expect.
Everything happens for a reason though.

Everything Happens for a Reason
Filed Under Poegles | Leave a Comment
We have a great set of submissions from a creative writing class at Roanoke College in Virginia. Using the phrase ‘everything happens for a reason’, with some modifications, the students have generated ten great poegles, each with a unique take on the form. Here’s the first- we’ll continue to post these throughout the week.
Simple As Can Be
Did I say “Simple as can be?”
I find this implausible.
Tom is quite Frank,
“There is somebody who’s doomed anyway.”
With no other conversation,
James recognizes the inconsistency,
but tries to cover it up.
“He gave up.”
“His heart wasn’t in it.”
“Look, I can’t do it.”
No one hears James say this.
He pretty much lost it.
“It doesn’t make sense to get rid of me.”
Tom says those words we’ve been dying to hear.
“Everything happens for a reason.”
It’s as simple as can be,
you gotta think that.
