As the Night Wore On
Rhino after rhino came walking towards the water with the gravest unconcern. Soldiers were falling asleep on their feet at every halt of the long procession. The director of photography and the unit production manager tore pages out of the script. I made a houseful of delightful new friends.
The cold finally broke through to Lindy and Michael, and the two were spotted embracing. She clung to the knob on the door with her good hand. The blackout became a kind of fun, weird experience.
The votes began to turn in favor of President Bush. The chants subsided, and the most prominent noise was the sound of empty bottles and cans crashing to the pavement. We were joined by cold but guardedly optimistic lawyers. There was a sharp increase in the Africans’ propensity to revolt. Finally, cuirassiers of the guard rode through the street to disperse the mob. There were long periods of complete silence, except for the chirping of the cicadas.
